]]><![CDATA[Compass Rose Exhibition - Ventura CA]]>Wed, 03 Nov 2021 18:56:06 GMThttp://www.connierohman.com/news/compass-rose-exhibition-ventura-caI was excited to be included in this exhibition at the 643 Project Space art gallery in Ventura, CA.  

Throughout the pandemic, many turned inward as we searched for touchstones to ground us, but we also sought solace from friends and family. Such a dynamic prefigured Compass Rose. Over the past eighteen months the six artists in this show shared their doubts, fears and achievements. We provided support for each other and the connection was especially welcome in the absence of art openings, gallery talks and studio visits. A compass rose points towards the four cardinal directions to help navigate the physical world. The art in this exhibit was made in part to help navigate the pandemic, and to find our center with the help of our friends. The way we cope and the art we create exemplify the universal desire to find direction and clarity in the midst of chaos.

​The 25 Million Stitches project will have it’s debut exhibition at the Verge Center for the Arts in Sacramento CA during June & August 2021. 

​The stitched textile piece here is my contribution.  The image is taken from the US highway road signs that were put up in response to the deaths from traffic collisions with refugees crossing the highway in order to make it to the US.  There were over 100 deaths in the period from 1987 to 1990.

Created by artist Jennifer Kim Sohn, 25 Million Stitches is a community art installation of embroidered fabric panels by volunteers from all over the world. By amassing 25 million stitches, this project brings awareness to the 25 million people across the globe who have been forced to flee their homelands as a consequence of genocide, war, poverty, natural disasters, targeted violence, and other grave threats.

Join textile artist Connie Rohman for a six-session workshop exploring textile surface design techniques! In this workshop, you will develop design skills and create original block printed and hand-dyed patterns inspired by textiles from around the world. Each participant will leave the workshop with 4 yards of hand-designed cotton fabric, hand-carved block printing stamps, and fabric inks to continue working on textile art projects at home. 

This class is designed for artists of all skill levels and backgrounds. If you a new to the art of textile design, this will be a wonderful introduction. If you are a returning textile student, this workshop is an opportunity to explore new projects and deepen your skills..

​These are the sessions that I will be teaching.  Hope you can join us!
Silk Dyeing:
Oct 24
Participants will dye two silk scarves (8” x 72”) with easy to use Colorhue silk dyes.   The scrunch dye method will be taught, as well as a demonstration of how to do easy shibori folds.  Each participant will go home with two beautifully dyed 100% habotai silk scarves.

Fabric Collage:
Nov 7
Fabric collage with rough edges (based on Susan Carlson’s techniques) is a simple and exciting process.  This class will free you to do and try things you thought you couldn’t do with fabric.   In the class, you will complete a unique fabric collage.

Fabric Collage Hand Stitching:
Nov 14
We will finish the collages we completed the week before.  Hand stitching and embroidery adds another dimension to your fabric collage.

Children's Hospital of Los Angeles has a group of my Odd Socks creatures on one of their waiting room walls.  A few weeks ago, I was contacted by the grandfather of a tiny patient who was undergoing heart surgery.  He wanted to know if I had any Odd Socks creatures available to purchase.  I was honored and happy to give him one - he came to my studio to pick out just the right one for his granddaughter.  She is recovering well.  Here's a photo of Madeleine and her new creature, which she has named “Daffodil.” ​
