Connie Rohman's Annual OPEN STUDIO, part of the

North by Northeast: 18th Annual Discovery Tour
on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, 9:30am - 5:00pm

New this year: I will be showing some of my works-in-progress, and demonstrating and talking about my fiber art techniques.

Come visit me, and/or buy a ticket for the tour and see some amazing art. If you come to me with the map, I can recommend some of my favorite artists for you to visit -- with over 100 artists, it's hard to get around to everyone in one day. The Discovery Tour is part of the Northeast LA art scene:

Northeast Los Angeles — or NELA, as residents call it — has a rich creative history that dates back to the late 19th century, when poet and writer Charles Lummis built his home “El Alisal” at Avenue 43. The hand-hewn residence quickly became a gathering place for writers and other luminaries. At around the same time, landscape painter William Lee Judson founded the Los Angeles College of Fine Arts and Architecture a few miles north. The school became USC’s first School of Fine Arts in the 1920s.

Today, Northeast Los Angeles offers a vibrant art walk the second Saturday of each month that includes several neighborhood galleries and attracts hundreds of enthusiasts. While the focus is local, the growing attention NELA is getting is turning international: the New York Times and the Financial Times of London have taken note of the NELA scene, as have many other respected art critics and publications.

"FIG KNIT-ON" Exhibition - Oct 9 thru Oct 31, 2010

Artists' Opening - Oct 9, 7pm-10pm

Artist's Opening: Sat. Oct 9, 2010 from 7pm-10pm (Part of NELA 2nd Sat Art Walk)
Exhibition open by appointment to Oct. 31st.
Future Studio Gallery: 5558 N. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles CA 90042 323-254-4565

Those of us who live in the North East section of Los Angeles recognize what a special place it is. For the month of October, we propose to make it even more magical by dressing everyday items found along Figueroa Street with varying combinations of fiber material. If you have ever thought to yourself, “Hey, that parking meter could use a sweater”, or “Wouldn’t knit flowers look good in that empty planting box”, then we have an exhibit for you. The act of Yarn Bombing combines the art of street installation with needlework to create colorful, unexpected, funny and sometimes political messages in a venue shared by everyone.

This is a two-fold exhibition, and will also include a more traditional wall display inside the gallery. The Opening Reception is part of the NELA 2nd Saturday Gallery Night. This is a great night out: art gallery party hopping, feasting on amazing gourmet trucks parked outside. Go to http://www.nelaart.com/ for more info and a map for this fun monthly event.
I'd love to see you at the Opening Reception!

Casa de Adobe Art Exhibition
We had a very successful art exhibition at the historic Casa de Adobe in Highland Park, as part of the Lummis Day 2009 Festival. Over 750 people came throughout the day to view art by J.Michael Walker, Jose Villeneuva, Raoul de la Sota, Julie Nagesh, Rick Willson, and Heriberto Luna. It's easy to for me to curate a show when I have access to such great artists. For information about Lummis Day, go to www.lummisday.org. Hope to see you next year!

SAA Squared Exhibition: Artists in Discussion Panel

Sunday, March 22, 2009 from 2-4 pm

The contemporary art world has seen an explosion in the use of fiber and textiles. Fine artists are moving into fiber art because it expands and explores new media artists are able to incorporate into their art. At the same time, art quilters are moving from their traditional roots towards a fine arts perspective. SAA Squared gives the viewer a compelling introduction to some of the newest work in this growing field.

Please join co-curators Connie Rohman and Kathy Mas-Gallegos, along with many of the SAA Squared artists for an informative discussion on the various processes, techniques used, and aesthetics of fiber art.
