The text in this piece is from Abraham Engle Conrow’s journal, chronicling his journey across the United States in 1880, following the death of his fiancée. The journal records the civil rights debates of the day, his working on a cattle drive, his meeting with Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians, and his eventual decision to return home to his Quaker family in Bloomington County, Pennsylvania. The journal is in the private collection of the artist.
