Detail

This piece, from my Line/Language series, contains the word “seam.” Like other pieces in this series, it combines the use of a stylized letter in each block, with the lines of the letters intersecting to form the abstract pattern.

The seam is the place where the disparate parts are drawn together into a unified vision, a finished garment, or a completed fiber art work. The seam is also the dividing line separating colors, letters, concepts and images. It is a way of binding and connecting.

There are seams in our own lives as well. This piece asks where are those seams in our lives? How do they bind us to others, while at the same time allowing us to delineate our individual selves from the rest of the world? How can we strengthen our bonds to the world around us, while still being true to our individual selves?
