The Arroyo Arts Collective Re-Discovery Tour: Connie Rohman's annual Open Studio
SAVE THE DATE: NOVEMBER 23, 2008
You've been wondering, you've been asking: When is that artist tour in Northeast Los Angeles, anyway? Shouldn't it be coming up? Well, mark your calendar. This year's tour was written up in the November issue of Sunset Magazine, and promises to be bigger and better than ever, with over 130 artists.
This year, there will be free shuttles going from the Lummis Home. These shuttles will provide a quick overview (ten minutes at each stop) so people can see many studios and come back to spend more time at the ones where they would like to purchase work and/or talk with the artist.
Shuttle Three (RED LOOP #1) will come up the hill to my house: it leaves Lummis Home at 10:30am and arrives back at Lummis Home at 1:00pm.
Come visit my open studio and see my new work.
When: Sunday, November 23, 2008, 9:30am-5:00pm
Where: Begins at the Lummis Home, 200 East Avenue 43, Los Angeles, CA 90031 (Free Shuttles!)
Preview Party: November 8, 7 - 10 pm at Future Studio, 5558 N. Figueroa Street, LA 90042. Examples of the Tour artists' works will be on display.
Tickets: $10 (plus $1 handling) advance on-line purchase, or $15 at the Lummis Home on the day of the Tour.

Connie Rohman's Open Studio on the Discovery Tour, November 22 & 23, 2008:
Connie Rohman and other artists throughout the Arroyo area open their studios and homes to visitors once a year, in the month of November, for the Discovery Tour. Sponsored by the Arroyo Arts Collective, this year's 16th Annual Discovery Tour showcases the artistic riches of the community. The neighborhoods of Highland Park, Mt. Washington and Eagle Rock are home to one of the largest concentrations of artists in Los Angeles. Artists will open their homes and studios for people to tour and purchase art. With over 80 participating artists, there will be plenty to see, including fiber art, oil and acrylic painting, fused glass art, assemblage, and other art forms.
Techniques, Ideas for using words in your own work:
As promised in my SAQA lecture at the International Quilt Festival Long Beach, here is a list of different ways to use words and language in your art quilts:
1. Photo Transfer – using products on market for printing from computer.
2. Citrasolve – print out the words on your computer's printer, xerox them, then use a cotton ball to dampen the back of the xerox copy, burnish with a spoon, as in Rayna Gilman's work.
3. Markers – use permanent markers to write with, pens. Prismacolor pencils work well.
4. Ink – Tsunineko ink with their markers. Or try a stick from your backyard with india ink.
5. Fabric Paint – use brushes and fabric paint.
6. Hand Embroidery – use water soluble pen and embroider over it.
7. Hand guided machine quilting – use water soluble pen and quilt over the line, or just quilt free hand.
8. Applique – Iron interfacing onto fabric, then cut out letters. Machine applique onto quilt.
9. Reverse machine applique - as in my AE's Journal piece.
9. Airpen - as in Susan Shie’s method.
10. Discharge techniques: Could paint words with discharge paste, or use thiox paste in syringe.
11. Screen printing - as in Angela Moll's method.
Hope this helps. Have fun trying out different methods until you find one or several that work for you.
