The 25 Million Stitches project will have it’s debut exhibition at the Verge Center for the Arts in Sacramento CA during June & August 2021. The stitched textile piece here is my contribution. The image is taken from the US highway road signs that were put up in response to the deaths from traffic collisions with refugees crossing the highway in order to make it to the US. There were over 100 deaths in the period from 1987 to 1990. Created by artist Jennifer Kim Sohn, 25 Million Stitches is a community art installation of embroidered fabric panels by volunteers from all over the world. By amassing 25 million stitches, this project brings awareness to the 25 million people across the globe who have been forced to flee their homelands as a consequence of genocide, war, poverty, natural disasters, targeted violence, and other grave threats. AuthorI am influenced by the landscape of my childhood, both interior and exterior. I grew up in a remote Quaker community adjacent to the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia, Canada. My work is also influenced by the strong light and colors of Los Angeles, my chosen home. Archives
