Long Beach Quilt Festival - Lecture: Color Story - Sat July 24, 2010 1:30-2:30pm
I will be lecturing at the SAQA Lecture Series, at the Long Beach Quilt Festival on Saturday July 24th at 1:30pm.
The lecture will start with a discussion of color's story: what it is, where it comes from, and how it has been used. We’ll explore cultural and historical trends in color. Then, we’ll have a little color theory & tips for the quilter: easy ways to pick colors for a quilt, how to achieve color balance, and how to fix color problems. Come learn little known facts about your favorite color, and leave with more confidence in working with your own color schemes.
I will also be volunteering at the SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) booth at the Long Beach Quilt Festival on Saturday July 24th from 3:30 to 5:30. Stop by and say hello!
Lummis Day Art Exhibition - June 6, 2010

We had between 1,300 and 1,500 people attend the art exhibition at Lummis home during the Lummis Day Festival 2010. Best year ever for art! The exhibition was a smashing success. the art looked fantastic, we had artists there talking to people, and people liked seeing the art as well as the Lummis home itself.
This annual art exhibition showcases emerging as well as established artists, all who live and work in our Northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods. My curatorial goal was to include a range of artistic mediums that would speak to Charles Lummis’ passion for art and craft. We exhibited sculpture, painting, assemblage, wood bowls, ceramic tile, fused glass, digital art, and printmaking. The arts movement in Northeast Los Angeles that was started by Charles Lummis continues to this very day.

Discovery Tour 2009
Once again, I will have an open studio on the Discovery Art Tour. This year fiber artist Rebecca Janes will join me, and will be exhibiting her wonderful fiber art pieces (http://janesrebeccaart.com/). This tour is chock full of great talent. Stop by, and bring friends! Here's the info:

Note: If you're intimidated by this long list of artists (how can you possibly see all these art studios in one day?), then get your map & ticket at the Lummis House, come up the hill to me, and I'll send you off to my personal favorites. Then again, you could also consult the photo board of artist's work at the Lummis House and pick your own favorites. Whatever you do, it'll be fun!

Casa de Adobe Art Exhibition
We had a very successful art exhibition at the historic Casa de Adobe in Highland Park, as part of the Lummis Day 2009 Festival. Over 750 people came throughout the day to view art by J.Michael Walker, Jose Villeneuva, Raoul de la Sota, Julie Nagesh, Rick Willson, and Heriberto Luna. It's easy to for me to curate a show when I have access to such great artists. For information about Lummis Day, go to www.lummisday.org. Hope to see you next year!

Techniques, Ideas for using words in your own work:
As promised in my SAQA lecture at the International Quilt Festival Long Beach, here is a list of different ways to use words and language in your art quilts:
1. Photo Transfer – using products on market for printing from computer.
2. Citrasolve – print out the words on your computer's printer, xerox them, then use a cotton ball to dampen the back of the xerox copy, burnish with a spoon, as in Rayna Gilman's work.
3. Markers – use permanent markers to write with, pens. Prismacolor pencils work well.
4. Ink – Tsunineko ink with their markers. Or try a stick from your backyard with india ink.
5. Fabric Paint – use brushes and fabric paint.
6. Hand Embroidery – use water soluble pen and embroider over it.
7. Hand guided machine quilting – use water soluble pen and quilt over the line, or just quilt free hand.
8. Applique – Iron interfacing onto fabric, then cut out letters. Machine applique onto quilt.
9. Reverse machine applique - as in my AE's Journal piece.
9. Airpen - as in Susan Shie’s method.
10. Discharge techniques: Could paint words with discharge paste, or use thiox paste in syringe.
11. Screen printing - as in Angela Moll's method.
Hope this helps. Have fun trying out different methods until you find one or several that work for you.
