Artist Statement:
In the late 1940s, two former enslaved African American women came to the Quaker Meeting in Tracy, California. They wanted to thank the Quakers for their involvement in the abolition movement against slavery by teaching them a coded Underground Railroad spiritual that they had learned when they were young slaves. My mother learned the song and codes from them, and I grew up singing it during Quaker worship services. The quilted words in the sky of this piece explain the story of the song, as well as its lyrics and codes.

There are several 'modern' ways of communicating that are soon to be lost. Once ubiquitous in offices everywhere, shorthand is no longer used to transcribe what a person is saying. I am drawn to the beauty of the shapes and lines that can be found in shorthand and visual ways to pay homage to this lost communication system.

This work is from my series of Line/Language artworks. Each piece stands on its own as an abstract, but with careful attention, the hidden message becomes apparent. The blocks are stylized letters that intersect with the lines in other blocks to form an abstract pattern. My stylized letter/blocks stay the same throughout this series, so once you have "read" one of these artworks, you will recognize the letters in others. This piece reads “Art is Life”.

Here & Now

Techniques: Fabric dyeing, reverse applique, piecing, hand guided machine quilting.
Artist Statement:
“Here & Now” speaks to what it means to be present, to be here and now in this moment. This artwork stands on its own as an abstract, but with careful attention, the hidden message becomes apparent. The dynamic lines spell out “Here And Now”, one word per panel. Each panel shows layered lines that create the letters which spell out each word. These lines were created from fabric on which I wrote my thoughts and feelings about what it means to be present and to live my life with intention. Thus, a simple abstract textile transforms to become an incitement to live our best lives in this current moment.
